Name: Jochen Guehlke Location: Berlin, Germany Aliases: J Breaker, Style Rockets (with DJ Emerson) Affiliations: ViperJive, Dangerous Drums, Timing, Lot49, Lab Rok, Tagsta, Basstard Recordings Circuit Breaker, Jochen Guehlke, is one of Berlin’s most in-demand artists & producers. As a breakbeat artist his skills are respected worldwide, with 12” releases appearing in USA, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, U.K., The Netherlands and of course Germany. His reputation grows with every release and his DJ sets have been rockin' for more than 10 years now, as dancing crowds confirm in more and more countries. In January 2005 he starts his first foreign residency at Smash FX's ocean club in Zuerich, after rockin’ that place twice in 2004.
In addition to his productions as Circuit Breaker, he is also provides engineering for the highly acclaimed DJ Emerson, label boss of storming Berlin techno label Kiddaz.FM. Their relentless desire for music is for sure the reason for the successful collaboration that led Emerson into the top league of techno artists.
Working with the remarkable established techno DJ Miss Yetti helped define her image as one of the “dark ladies” of techno. With her, Circuit Breaker creates a unique style using strong influences of 80's industrial/ebm music.
Everything started in the early 80's when he started playing guitar in several punk/metal bands. After watching a TV special about breakdancing in New York City, he also started to learn this fascinating form of expression (probably the only one wearing Motorhead t-shirts at breakdancing contests). Soon he discovered the art of mixing vinyl as he watched his friend on the decks.
In 1987 he bought his first mixer and turntables. At the time, this was not everyone’s pleasure. As a logical progression he assembled equipment for a small home recording studio in the early 90's.
In 1995 he released a full length album under the name of Barka Morada which contained elements of Ambient, Trip Hop, Techno and of course Breakbeat.
1997 he made his debut as Circuit Breaker on the newly founded German breakbeat label Spike Records. Circuit Breaker’s tunes on Spike were very successful, and were licensed to CD compilations and could be found alongside tracks by Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers and Prodigy to mention a few.
In 1999 he signed a deal with US major label “Mercury” with a 4 album option but it was dropped 3 weeks before the first release. The new owner of Mercury (Seagate/Universal) dropped many of Mercury’s artists when taking over.
Circuit Breaker didn't care, however, as he was also signed to Timing Records and left his hometown Mainz in 2000 to move to Berlin. Since then he made his way (not only in the breakbeat scene) as a producer for many artists/labels, such as Tanith, Miss Yetti, DJ Emerson + Holgi Star (Kiddaz FM), ED2000 & DJ Vela (Dangerous Drums) and collaborated with Dr. Motte, Toby Izui, Rod Gonzales (Die Ärzte), and Robert Görl (of German electronic music legend DAF). His impressive discography contains more than 100 releases and the number is steadily climbing!
The sheer amount of production work kept him away from his own projects for a while, but in 2003 he got back at it, and had his first release in the USA (on KWS Records in Seattle), as well as founding the label ViperJive with DJ Tosh, where he serves as the A&R Manger. In 2005, ViperJive’s third release “Got the Funk/Kick It” was a massive success topping almost every major breakbeat hype and sales chart in the UK and North America.
ViperJive has its focus on funky breakbeat tunes and received brilliant reactions from the breakbeat scene worldwide, requests for tunes or remixes from Vertical Sound (UK), Money Shot (Canada), Dangerous Drums (Germany), iBreaks (UK), Release (Canada), and Ritmic (Switzerland) followed.
In 2005 he will make his debut on Lot49, the new successful label of the international highly respected artist, Meat Katie.
Other well known labels contacted him for new material, others asked for remixes, so he is as always busy in the studio.
2005 will definitely be his year, so watch out, the story only begins here…
