Release Date: Mar 20, 2006

“Left Hook” rides the funky end of Circuit Breaker’s production styles, much like “Got the Funk” and “Supa”. It features a groovy organ lick, clean driving chunky drums and pulsating bass alongside some choice chopped vocals. It’s just a solid, no nonsense dancefloor tune!

Switching things up on the B Side, we have the always impressive SuperStyleDeluxe who provide a twisted electro breaks rework that’s full of funky horns, tight drums, and their signature bass tone that they’re so well known for. And to spice things up even further, they’ve also added some of their own vocals!

Magazine & website reviews

InTheMix.com.au (Chris Downton)
This latest 12" from Ontario-based breaks label Moneyshot Recordings follows hot on the heels of their recent fantastic ‘Dirty Girls’ vinyl release from Canadian producer Myagi, and this time, the spotlight falls upon in-demand German producer Circuit Breaker (aka Jochen Guehlke), who’s also released productions under names such as Lot49, Dangerous Drums and Lab Rok.

On the A-side of this 12", the Original mix of ‘Left Hook’ leans distinctly towards the streamlined, electro-infused end of the breaks spectrum, the deep, rolling synth bassline nicely offset by a deep backdrop of shimmering vaguely Detroit-tinged pads and some nicely unexpected Brazilian vocal shouts that kick in just before the snares lock down into smooth motion – unfortunately, on my review copy, I didn’t get to savour the entire track itself, but what I did get to hear will most definitely go down well with fans of the likes of the Plump DJs, JDS and Atomic Hooligan.

On the flip, Superstyledeluxe’s storming reworking pushes the button marked ‘funk’, injecting some welcome additional chunkiness into the breakbeats along with stabbing Shaft-esque horn samples and a vocal MC sample that sounds like it’s repeatedly saying ‘Dr. Octagon’ over the snare syncopation, while at the same time bumping the thickness of the synth bassline to even more elastic levels – for my money, it just edges out in front as the strongest of two excellent mixes here. Another stellar release from a new breaks imprint worth keeping an eye on.

Resident Advisor (Karl Palma)
Following up his second release for Moneyshot, Germany's Circuit Breaker has certainly been making headway into the breakbeat scene with luminaries such as Meat Katie name checking him as one of the leading lights in the future of the scene, not to mention signing him to lot49 for Gateway/Soulsearcher. Circuit Breaker follows up his party rocking Supa (which was done with Deckart) with a much deeper and percussive Left Hook. Representing on the remix tip are Superstyledeluxe who are certainly making their payback felt with releases on Supercharged and their own Payback Project.
Side A. Original
Left Hook features trademark Circuit Breaker style drum beats however, he's added a slightly different shuffle to the beats giving it that "broom sweep" feel. Progressively elements such as a deep, droning electro bassline, subtle bongo riff, turntable scratches and a buzzing synth hook make their prescence felt in the tune. Ploddy? Slightly! Heavy? Definitely and it's certainly something different from what we've heard from Moneyshot.

Side B. Superstyledeluxe Remix
Upon hearing that Superstyledeluxe were doing the remix, it came to mind that one should expect something completely different as the SSD boys are known to conjure up something extraordinary with their electro-funk-disco-b-boy-breakbeat sound. The tune opens up with a slightly different take on the original breakbeat with that all too prominent SSD style hi-hat rhythm and some hard hitting horn stabs beefing up the intro. That's not all that gets beefed up though as SSD drop their trademark warbling bassline and breakbeat rhythms into the mix to give the remix a full, yet disjointed sound. Sure it can throw you offbeat, but that big and original sound just has to be appreciated.

Plastic Soup (James Orton)
Talk of the town Circuit Breaker make their second appearance on Money Shot with this slab of funked up breaks. Whilst not being a fan of their previous output, this 12 caught me by surprise, the original mix chugging along with some nice scratching touches. Unfortunately though it never really delivers and becomes, dare I say it, monotonous. Luckily the remix is a different story, with Telford lad Superstyledeluxe offering an impressive touch. Injected with new vocals and a choppy electro-funk style this tune comes alive, making it definitely one for those smiles on face party moments. 8/10
