Money Shot Recordings is officially back in action, and what better way to kick things off than with quite possibly the finest Maelstrom tune we have ever heard. “The Glue” starts out with a downright funky electro lick, then seals the deal with a sinister bassline after the breakdown. It’s a perfect blend of old school stabs and chunky beats.

First up on remix duties is Money Shot stalwart, Myagi who has enjoyed massive success with his recent album “3 Years of Sunrise” and his chart-topping “Giorgio Marauder” single. His remix of “The Glue” strips down the tune into a tech funk monster, ideal for that prime time DJ slot. Watch your bass bins on this one.

Joining Money Shot is Greek producer Timewarp Inc. who cranks up the funk to eleven. Adding a groovy bassline, scratch samples, and extra guitar riffs, we’re sure you’ll absolutely love this mix if you’re a fan of Fort Knox Five, Skeewiff, or All Good Funk Alliance. Maelstrom

Joan Mael Peneau is not a name many would recognise immediately but his two aliases (Malestrom and Mr. Strom) have both grounded strong reputations in their respective scenes for pushing the boundaries of their genres.

As an electro and broken beat artist, Maelstrom, busted onto the scene in 2007, establishing his party sounds in amidst a competitive French market flooded by Nu Skool, Tear-Out and Hard Style artists. Incredibly, he was able to redefine the Funky and Party Broken Beats genre, with a unique sound that harmonizes with the ever-popular Electro genre pioneered and governed by his countrymen, Daft Punk, Justice and the many Ed Banger artists. The ensuing sounds have been heralded to have “bridge the void between French Electro and Party Breaks”; And Electro and Breakbeat artists, fans and enthusiasts around the world have taken note, supporting him to a nomination at the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards for “Best Breakthrough Producer”.

As a funk artist, Mr. Strom, has held his own in a very tight knit scene, with a steady flow of well received original and bootleg releases on a plethora of French and UK labels, including Jalepeno Records, Rotax Disques, Labrok, East Records and Innvision including the much famed bootleg, “Hollyboot Swinging”.

Joan Mael Peneau began his career playing and producing Electro in the mid 90’s, drawing influence from the works of Mo’Wax Recordings. It was in the period proceeding this, from 1998 through to 2005, that he struck somewhat of a mid-career identity crisis, dabbling in a variety of genres and releasing more than 20 EPs in various styles including Techno, Drum n Bass, Hardcore and Down Tempo Funk under several aliases. In 2005, Joan realised his calling and finding new direction in a genre that was virtually unknown in his home country, France, at the time – Nu Skool Breaks. The open format of Breakbeat allowed him to synthesize all of the styles and sounds of which he has previously produced, played and loved throughout his career. This combined with the fact that he had found himself at the forefront of a new scene in France allowed his new alias, Maelstrom, the liberty to be creative and adventurous with his work and inspired him to create what is now unique recognised as the Maelstrom sound: “Funky rhythms sampled from Soul and R&B music archives, layered with loud, phat basslines, a tough electro styled groove with a straight-up Breakbeat swagger.”

In 2007, Maelstrom realised his two separate loves were best appreciated apart, with booking requests for one genre or the other and rarely together. For this reason, Maelstrom assigned his primary alias to the tougher Electro and Broken Beats genres and a second alias he had acquired by necessity in releasing unapproved bootlegs, Mr. Strom, to his funk projects. With this new structure and direction to his craft, Mael went to work and made 2007 and 2008 his busiest years to date: On the Electro and Broken Beats front, Maelstrom had seven releases in 2007; among which were remixes for Boogie Army (“Dynamite”) and Rob Reng (“Dope Pope” and the dancefloor bomb, “Disto Funk”. The track was snapped up by Krafty Kuts for his Fabric Live compilation and gather the support of many leading DJs, namely the Aquasky, Slyde, Rico Tubbs, Jay Cunning, NAPT, Ollywood, Drumattic Twins, DJ Icey and General Midi.

He followed up this successful run in 2008 with “Makossa”, which was also remixed by industry superweights, the Drumattic Twins. This was backed up with the first two releases on his own Record Label, Katorza: a remix of Redux’s “Diskobreaks” and a collaboration with MC Youthstar, “Beat Police”. The latter recently scoring 4/5 in IDJ Magazine. And these three were just at the start of the year; Maelstrom has five more tracks including two tracks on infamous Canadian Label, Money Shot Recordings. On the Funk front, Mr. Strom has established himself as a serious force in the scene with five massive releases in 2007 and two further releases in 2008. Notably, “Hollyboot Swinger”, the funky “Fight the Power”, “Mash the Peas” and his recent hit, “Fresh Kingz”; All regular occupants of Funk DJs’ record crates the world over.

With such a healthy back catalogue, Maelstrom/Mr. Strom toured most of the world in 2007 and 2008, performing before enthusiastic electro and funk fans in Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland many times over, as well as at London institution, Fabric.

With two successful DJ and production careers before him, Mael has quite simply exploded onto the scene in the past two and half years, drawing the support of artists across the globe, including the likes of Laurent Garnier, Crookers, Krafty Kuts, Aquasky, A.Skillz, Lady Waks, Cut La Roc, the Utah Saints, Ellis Dee, Rennie Pilgrem and the Plump DJs. You can be sure that you’ll be hearing a lot more of the names Maelstrom and Mr. Strom in 2009!

Timewarp Inc

Timewarp was born in Athens, Greece 25 years before the second millennium. He was introduced to electronic music at age 13 when he acquired an Amiga. Captivated by the fledging technology’s potential he started working on his own sounds and soon found his musical identity in the area of chill sound beats. You can find him under the aliases Timewarp inc. or Timewarp a.k.a Angelos Stoumpos.

Being a dj as well as a composer he became famous in the Greek underground electronica scene in early 90’s. Over the years he appeared in numerous parties and venues and he created one of the first pioneering dance projects in Greece. Influenced by and joining forces with a number of other composers and artists he started expanding the character of his music, combining smooth baselines with melodic instruments like flute, percussions, vocals, guitars creating a very characteristic worm ethereal worldly sound. At the same time his production style moved into funky sounds obtaining rough edges that applied to his music a dramatic intensity. His well-defined music signature can be easily identified in all his productions from dud, downtempo to funky breaks and dance.

Timewarp has contributed in many releases of various record labels like: ecco.chamber, Sony BMG, V2, Irma, Waveform and more. He licensed music for commercial motion TV advertising spots for brands like Honda, WV-Polo, Seat, Stolichnaya, Old Holborn, Alpha Bank and more.

He has even remixed artists like Deep Dive Corporation, Dunkelbunt, Maelstrom, Geriba and more. Counting four personal albums, one remixed album and one EP, Timewarp inc. has many quotes and positive feedback from international and popular artists like Dublex inc (Pulver records), Ralf Droesemeyer (Mo’Horizons), Deep Dive Corporation (In-D Records), Jose Maria Ramon (Ibiza Global Radio), Ed Royal & Dj Enne (Innvision), All Good Funk Alliance (Funk Weapons), Fort Knox Five (Fort Knox records), Helmut (Lounge Records), Groovecatcher (Mole), Dj Aeon Seven (Ninja Tunes), FDEL (Freestyle),Cay Taylan (Couch Records), Maelstrom (Labrok / Jalapeno), Danny Massure (Ticklejunk), Tal M. In early 2004 he created the independent record label Timewarp Music which has already released 7 CDs and 22 Digital Ep’s. In 2008 the label has scheduled to release more CDs and EPs. The music style is totally Freestyle, which means everything is blended from Nu Funk, Breaks, Dub to House & Downtempo.

Timewarp has played at big festivals and clubs around Greece and Europe, together with big names like: Parov Stelar, Quantic soul orchestra, Gilles Peterson, Dublex inc, Quincy Jointz, Uwe Walkner, Scheibosan and more to mention.

For live performances he runs his five-member band of musicians including instruments: Base, Guitar, Percussions, Vocals, Keyboards, Sax, Flute & Electronics.

From January 2007 he runs an international weekly radio show on Ibiza Global Radio (Spain), Radio42 (Germany) Seven Skies (Russia) and in Greece at: Pirate FM (Chios), Mousiko Kanali (Crete), Radio 108 (Mitilini), Mojo radio (Patra), Best Fm (Kalamata) and Smothtraxx (Athens). Many of his Dj sets can be found on Austrian’s on-demand & live radio, Play.Fm.

Basement Freaks

The Basement Freaks project started in 2005 by George Fotiadis, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Thessaloniki/Greece. George has been around the local scene from early 90’s where he was the songwriter & guitarist of an indie rock band. He also played with many other local bands and worked as a P.A engineer. After many years working in the studio he finally started composing & producing the Basement Freaks sound in 2005. His debut cd album “Urban Jungle” was released by Music Kitchen Records, a label based in Thessaloniki, Greece. The album got positive feedback from some great producers in the scene such as Stereo Mcs & Kraak n Smaak.

Remixing various artists like Chris Joss/Rephrase/Ed Royal for some very well known labels as ESL music (U.S.A), Knowfool Records (AUSTRALIA), Invision Records (AUSTRIA), the Basement Freaks sound is firmly in the global underground Funky Breakbeat scene. Feedback has been fantastic from producers like: A.Skillz, Flow Dynamics, A.G.F.A, Smoove, Q Dup Foundation, Fort Knox Five,Valique who support the Basement Freaks tunes!

His 1st vinyl E.P was released by “South City Recordings” a label from Atlanda/U.S.A in Oct 2007. In late 2007, Basement Freaks meets Quasamodo to collaborate on the track Move Sucka, which was released on Goodgroove Records.

George Fotiadis & Dimitris Nassios formed a new avant-guard cinematic & nujazz project called Smokey Bandits. In late 2007, George moved to Athens for recording with his partner on the Smokey Bandits project Dimitri@Quasamodo!

In 2008, Basement Freaks entered with a new project with Kosta Kostov: the Balkan Express Sound Systema, where Greece meets Bulgaria and the Balkan meets all the nice flavas. You can expect a diverse sound from this collaboration… everything from Dub & Reggae and Funk & Breaks to Breakbeat & Drum ‘n’ Bass.

After moving in November 2008 from Thessaloniki to Cologne, George started working with Kosta Kostov on the bXp Soundsystema LIVE. Keep on the lookout for bXp at clubs & festivals around the world very soon.

2008 was a very productive year for the Basement Freaks project. Many tracks were released, and there are also lots of unreleased tracks in the pipeline in 2009 for labels such as Goodgroove/Wack/Super Hifi/Sunsetsoul/Aniligital/Manmade.
