Maelstrom
Joan Mael Peneau is not a name many would recognise immediately but his two aliases (Malestrom and Mr. Strom) have both grounded strong reputations in their respective scenes for pushing the boundaries of their genres.
As an electro and broken beat artist, Maelstrom, busted onto the scene in 2007, establishing his party sounds in amidst a competitive French market flooded by Nu Skool, Tear-Out and Hard Style artists. Incredibly, he was able to redefine the Funky and Party Broken Beats genre, with a unique sound that harmonizes with the ever-popular Electro genre pioneered and governed by his countrymen, Daft Punk, Justice and the many Ed Banger artists. The ensuing sounds have been heralded to have “bridge the void between French Electro and Party Breaks”; And Electro and Breakbeat artists, fans and enthusiasts around the world have taken note, supporting him to a nomination at the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards for “Best Breakthrough Producer”. Listening and recording Mike Allan on Radio 1 and Dave Pearce on GWR, performing tape edits and overdubs on two tape decks while scratching over the top on a single record player.
By 1984 Charlie had his own decks and mixer, practicing turntablism and putting on events for the local kids at schools, local youth clubs and Romford Skatepark. He followed the hip-hop scene religiously, entering DMC events and warming up for the legendary London Based soundsystem ‘Locomotion’ being involved in all day events with the likes of Soul to Soul, Ratpack, Hype, Froggy. Groove Allegiance
No breaks label would touch these boys with a barge pole so Jonny and Chris of Groove Allegiance thought “Bugger them, we’ll sign ourselves”. Even then after setting up Splank! it took 4 releases before they had the courage to unleash their imitable P-Funk breaks sound. And what a debut it was, ‘Hunkle My Funkle/System 100’ stormed onto the scene gaining worldwide acclaim from the big name DJ’s and airplay on Annie Nightingale’s BBC Radio 1 show.
In a mission to spread their funkalicious groove disease they’ve produced a successsful follow up ‘Rolands Revenge/A Good Day For Shirkin’, pimped themselves out to ibreaks and remixed for Circuit Breaker’s Viperjive and Jmekka’s Vive. For the future they’ve got collaborations penned in with Moneyshot (thanks for the site Angus!) and of course Splank! Read more…

Drumattic Twins
Nick Slater and Lanx’s (aka Kevin Lancaster) stage name was the consequence of having amplified attacks of drum-machine seizures in their loft. Even the strongest prescriptions could not calm the frenzy of 12 years of multi-faceted producing and DJing that would ensue before they landed at Finger Lickin’.
The Drumattic Twins’ biography constructs their musical biology. As children of the dance revolution would remember, many moons ago, Nick and Lanx were known as the chart topping Shades of Rhythm. Two of the three, the reprehensible Nick and Lanx along with vocalist Rayan Gee, were then responsible for tunes like ‘Sweet Sensation’, ‘Homicide’, ‘Ecstasy’ and ‘Sound of Eden’ - tracks so seminal, they’re likely to induce misty-eyed rumblings about “the good old days”.
